What NMCD Runs
NMCD is the official abbreviation for the New Mexico Corrections Department. The agency's own site, offender-search page, and search application use that abbreviation. NMCD is the statewide correctional agency for people sentenced to New Mexico state prison and for people under state probation or parole supervision. It is not the custodian for county jail rosters, city detention lists, tribal holding cells, federal Bureau of Prisons records, or ICE detainee records.
The Adult Prisons Division operates the prison side of NMCD. The 2025 annual report says the division operates eight public correctional facilities and contracts for a portion of one privately operated facility, with total housing capacity of 6,364 inmates. The same report describes prison operations, classification, records management, constituent services, and health services as part of the statewide custody system. The instruction page says users must know an offender's first or last name, or an NMCD number, to begin. The search form accepts Last Name, First Name, or Offender Number. It also provides status choices for Active, Include Inactive, and Absconder Only. NMCD's current facility model is smaller than older annual-report descriptions. The 2021 report described 10 correctional institutions with housing capacity just under 7,800 and a calendar-year 2021 daily average population of 5,821. By FY2025, the department described eight public correctional facilities plus a portion of one private facility and total capacity of 6,364. The live July 6, 2026 count of 5,677 sits below that capacity figure and below older capacity context.
Current official facility context includes Central New Mexico Correctional Facility in Los Lunas, Guadalupe County Correctional Facility in Santa Rosa, Northeast New Mexico Correctional Facility near Clayton, Penitentiary of New Mexico in Santa Fe, Roswell Correctional Center, Springer Correctional Center, Southern New Mexico Correctional Facility near Las Cruces, Western New Mexico Correctional Facility in Grants, and Otero County Prison Facility as the privately operated facility listed by NMCD. Lea County Correctional Facility needs a dated caveat because NMCD said it would conclude use of that facility by June 30, 2025.

The safest reading is that New Mexico's prison population remains below the older just-under-7,800 capacity context, with current counts moving around annual averages.

NMCD Release Records
People enter NMCD custody through a judgment and sentence. NMCD Records and Classifications says that judgment gives NMCD authority to incarcerate the person. Offender Management Services determines release dates, accounts for earned and forfeited good time, and oversees interstate compact inmates. That work is separate from county jail booking. A county roster may stop showing a person after transfer even though the person remains incarcerated in state custody.
Earned meritorious deductions are governed by Section 33-2-34 NMSA 1978 and NMCD policy. Eligibility depends on offense, sentence, revocation status, and program participation. SB 375, signed as Chapter 79 on April 7, 2025, clarified parts of the good-time and parole-revocation framework, removed monthly parole fees, and allowed early discharge from probation for low-risk offenders who meet conditions. Exact release dates still depend on the judgment, credits, board action, detainers, warrants, and supervision conditions.

NMCD Parole Context
Parole is not the same as county pretrial release. The New Mexico Parole Board is an independent agency reporting to the governor, and the NMCD-hosted Parole Board page cites authority to grant, deny, or revoke parole under Section 31-21-25 NMSA 1978. NMCD's Probation and Parole Division supervises people in the community, while parole decisions and revocations involve the board's statutory role.

NMCD Records Requests
New Mexico's Inspection of Public Records Act, NMSA 1978, Sections 14-2-1 to 14-2-12, provides public access to public records with exceptions. NMCD's IPRA notice says every person has the right to inspect public records of a public body, including the Corrections Department, but some records are not subject to inspection. Exceptions can include medical records, some law-enforcement records, and employee disciplinary or performance materials.
A written NMCD request must include the requester's name, address, telephone number, and a reasonably particular description of the records sought. The NMCD notice says inspection must be permitted immediately or as soon as practicable. If inspection is not allowed within three business days, the custodian must explain when records will be available or when NMCD will respond. Records normally must be available for inspection and copying within 15 calendar days unless the request is excessively burdensome or broad.
